The Design Thought-Process behind this Contemporary-Rustic Home
This one-of-a-kind, functional custom home was designed and built by our full-service, in-house design/build team at WLH Custom Homes. This home is one of our two BCHBA Spring 2018 showcase homes we are presenting. During the first weekend of Showcase, we had so many questions regarding our homes and our full-service approach, so we thought we’d do a blog explaining our team’s design thought-process throughout the creation of our showcase homes over the last several months.
Our team had the honor of working alongside the owners of this home from start to finish to ensure their specific visions came to life. As with every project, our Interior Designer assisted the clients with all finish selections throughout the process to be sure they were well informed of all the options available to them, and were never overwhelmed with the decisions that had to be made in order to keep the project moving along in a timely, efficient and organized manner. WLH Custom Homes sets itself apart from other builders by being involved and virtually “hand holding” our clients throughout the entire design/build process to be sure they feel comfortable and are not left to make decisions on their own. Our goal is not only to provide our clients with the best quality home, but also to provide them with the best quality experience along the way.
This charming ranch with finished lower level melds together an eclectic mix of natural materials and contemporary design concepts. The efficient, functional layout was strategically designed to fit its property lines, and to also fit the family’s needs now and in the future.
First on the priority list was an open concept kitchen, dining and living room in the center of the home. The 12-foot ceiling in the living room features hand-crafted solid wood beams milled at our own Sawmill through our parent company, Wisconsin Log Homes. We created a unique, eye-catching railing system that combines rustic wood to coordinate with the ceiling beams and modern horizontal cables in between. Tall windows in the living room as well as windows on all sides of the dining space creates a bright and open atmosphere and provides expansive views to the outdoors. White-washed rustic shiplap is placed on the walls in these spaces to give the rooms a cozy, organic feel. The kitchen boasts a large 11’ center Island ideal for entertaining, a large walk-in pantry, Quartz countertops and a beautiful herringbone backsplash to top it all off. This space is bright, open and timeless; and ideal for an intimate family gathering at home, or entertaining a large group of extended family or friends.
The main level features three private bedrooms; the master suite sits on one side of the home and two additional bedrooms are tucked into the opposite wing. The office is located off the foyer through gorgeous “barn doors” that match the painted white interior doors throughout the home. Each of these rooms feature shiplap accent walls to provide texture and character.
The spacious and uber-organized mudroom and laundry room will work perfectly for the family’s needs and also feature two natural-edge benches handcrafted by our in-house Craftsmen. The lower level includes a guest bedroom, full bath, bonus room, theater room and full bar with massive natural-edge bar top also handcrafted by our team. The lower level provides additional entertaining space and is finished in style. We’re picturing lots of Packer parties and movie nights here! There is also an abundance of storage throughout the home; a "must" in every home we design!
Furniture and accessories staged in the main living area of the home were taken from our Office/Showroom where we have furniture, unique accessories and handcrafted wood pieces made by our in-house Craftsmen for sale. The dining room table was custom crafted of Ash and metal by our team to fit the owner's needs and style.
This home is so special to us. We are deeply grateful to the owners for the trust they placed in our team to help create their beautiful custom home. This project has a big piece of our heart and has been so much fun to work on over the last few months. We hope you can come out to see both our Showcase homes (House #35 and House #8) this coming weekend!
Design Note: We’ve built many variations similar to this versatile custom design throughout Wisconsin. Our team will work with you from concept to completion to create a custom home that’s unique to your personal needs, style, property and budget.
